Chief Dr. Oliver De Coque's classic highlife track “Identity” was first released in October 1991 by Chief Dr. Oliver De Coque and His Expo ‘76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa. It quickly became a hit, staying on Radio Nigeria 2's top ten chart for several weeks.
The song carries a powerful message about being true to yourself. In “Identity,” Oliver talks about waking up and praying morning and evening, working hard, keeping promises he can keep, and living honestly. He sings that music is his talent and identity and reflects on respecting his roots and growing up with integrity.
More than three decades later, his son Darlington, also known as Safin, remixed the song, bringing back the spirit of Ogene sound. He reassembled his late father's band, including old backup vocalists, to give fans a fresh yet deeply familiar version under Virgin Bird Entertainment.
If you love songs grounded in tradition and values, with guitar-driven highlife grooves and heartfelt lyrics, “Identity” is a timeless piece—part legacy, part life lesson.
